ECP issues preliminary delimitation lists ahead of general elections

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) released preliminary delimitation lists.

In press release issued here, ECP informed public that preliminary delimitation report along with Form 5 lists has been posted on commission’s website, along with maps of initial delimitation.

Publication of preliminary constituencies will extend for 30 days, from September 27 to October 26, during which objections (representations) regarding preliminary constituencies can be submitted by voters of relevant constituency.

Report revealed that Punjab has largest number of seats in National Assembly, followed by Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Islamabad.

In Punjab, with population of 127.6 million, 141 National Assembly seats were allocated, with each constituency based on quota of 905,595. For Punjab Assembly, 297 seats were assigned, with quota of 429,929 per seat.

In Sindh, 61 National Assembly seats were designated for population of 55.6 million, with quota of 913,052 per seat. Sindh Assembly had 130 seats, each with quota of 428,432.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, census revealed population of 40.8 million, resulting in 45 National Assembly seats, each with quota of 907,913.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was allotted 115 seats with quota of 355,270. Balochistan, with population of 14.8 million was granted 16 National Assembly seats, and each constituency was divided based on quota of 930,900. Provincial assembly of Balochistan comprised 51 seats, with each seat divided based on quota of 292,047.

Meanwhile, Islamabad, federal capital, with population of 2.3 million was allocated 3 seats and each seat’s quota was determined to be 787,954. Report explained methodology employed by ECP in delimiting national and provincial assembly seats. Similar process was employed for provincial assembly seats. In cases where fraction exceeded 0.5, it was considered as one seat, while fractions below 0.5 were disregarded.
