ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) initiated proceedings to remove Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan as party chief following his disqualification in Toshakhana reference. Initiating formal proceedings, electoral watchdog sent notice for removal of Imran Khan as Chairman of PTI and summoned him on December 13.
Sources privy to matter said that PTI confirmed of receiving notice sent by electoral watchdog, while PTI leader Asad Umar has decided to write letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sultan Sikandar Raja seeking reason behind issuing notice. Earlier, Lahore High Court (LHC) sought response from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Asad Umar for his diatribe against judiciary in his November 26 speech at his party’s Rawalpindi power show.
Justice Jawad Hassan of LHC’s Rawalpindi bench heard petition filed by an additional registrar of Rawalpindi registry against former Planning Minister. Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner, CPO and Umar’s lawyer Advocate Faisal Chaudhry appeared before court. During hearing, Justice Hassan remarked that PTI leader used contemptuous words against courts. Saying no one could make any institution or personality controversial under Constitution, judge remarked that court had authority to punish such elements. Court summoned PTI leader on next hearing scheduled for December 7.
Umar addressed PTI’s final showdown of its long march and took aim at judiciary.” Nation can see that doors of justice are closed even in Supreme Court,” he had said. While referring to lack of registration of case against assassination attempt on Imran Khan, he had said that justice did not prevail in country.
