Dutch envoy, interim Finance Minister discuss trade ties

Islamabad: Ambassador of Netherlands Henny De Vries called on caretaker Minister for Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs Dr. Shamshad Akhtar at Finance Division. Discussions covered various aspects of bilateral economic relations between two countries. Secretary EAD and senior officers from Finance Division attended meeting.

Upcoming elections in Netherlands were prominent topic of discussion, with both parties emphasising importance of Democratic processes.

Ambassador Henny De Vries congratulated Dr. Shamshad Akhtar for reaching Staff Level Agreement of 1st Review of IMF Pakistan Standby Arrangement and also on overall improvement in economic situation in Pakistan.

Dr. Shamshad Akhtar highlighted reforms being taken by government in various sectors specifically those related to expansion of tax net through “Broadening of Tax Base” initiative led by Federal Board of Revenue, showcasing commitment of government to improve tax to GDP ratio of country and reduce Current Account Deficit further.

She requested Ambassador to enhance focus on Dutch Fellowship programme in past was one of flagship foreign-funded scholarship programmes for Pakistani students. Henny De Vries acknowledged positive momentum in economic recovery, highlighting resurgence of sectors such as agriculture, services and even industry.  Interim Minister expressed strong commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with Netherlands and making collaborative efforts for benefit of both countries.
