Domestic unit sheds value against dollar

KARACHI: Rupee registered marginal decline against dollar, depreciating 0.03 percent in interbank market.
At close, domestic unit settled at 278.77, loss of 0.07 paisa against dollar. In open market, dollar changed hand to around Rs 279 for buying and to Rs 278.70 for selling, currency dealers said. Globally, safe-haven Japanese yen rallied on Wednesday while riskier currencies like Australian dollar and sterling languished as traders ran for cover following worst sell-off in almost month on Wall Street. Oil prices, key indicator of currency parity, fell on Wednesday, extending plunge of more than 4 percent previous day and hovering at their lowest since December, on expectations that political dispute halting Libyan exports could be resolved and concerns over sluggish global demand. Brent crude futures for November fell 43 cents, or 0.6 percent, to $ 73.32, after previous session's fall of 4.9 percent. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures for October were down 49 cents, or 0.7 percent at $ 69.85, after dropping 4.4 percent.
