Court orders unfreezing of Nawaz Sharif's assets

An Islamabad accountability court, under the jurisdiction of Judge Mohammad Bashir, has issued an order on Friday to lift the freeze on former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's assets in the Toshakhana reference case.

The court's decision followed Nawaz Sharif's application requesting the release of his properties, which had been seized by the Punjab provincial government after he was declared a proclaimed offender in the Toshakhana case.

In 2020, the same accountability court had issued orders to forfeit Nawaz Sharif's assets in the Toshakhana reference, including land, luxury vehicles, and accounts in local and foreign banks. The court had declared him a 'proclaimed offender,' issuing a permanent arrest warrant due to his continuous non-appearance.

The seized assets included 1,650 canals of agricultural land in Lahore, 102 canals in Sheikhupura, and his residence in Murree. Additionally, the former prime minister was found to own three vehicles, including a Land Cruiser and two Mercedes.

Last month, Nawaz Sharif was granted bail in the Toshakhana case, with the accountability court suspending his arrest warrant. The former premier surrendered before the court, presided over by Judge Muhammad Bashir, in connection with the case.
