Court discharges Lt Gen (retd) Amjad from incitement case

ISLAMABAD: District and Sessions Court of federal capital discharged Lt Gen (retd) Amjad Shoaib defence analyst from case registered against him here in Ramna Police Station on February 25 for ‘inciting public against national institutions’ and consequently he was arrested by police. Additional Sessions Judge Tahir Abbas Supra discharged Amjad Shoaib from case while announcing his verdict on review petition filed by lawyers of Amjad Shoaib against his three-day physical remand.

On Monday, Judicial Magistrate Abbas Shah granted police three-day physical remand of retired senior army officer. Prosecutor had contended before court Amjad Shoiab, through his statement on TV, tried to spread hate between government, opposition and government employees. Case was registered against Amjad Shoaib under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups, etc) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Case was registered on complaint of Islamabad’s Magistrate Owais Khan. Complainant contended that Amjad Shoaib ‘incited’ people to revolt against institutions and attempted to provoke disharmony, and anarchy and create law and order situation in country through his controversial statements made on TV show.
