Corruption weakening social fabric in our society: Gov Tessori

Karachi: Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori said that corruption is responsible for weakening social fabric of our society and collective approach should be adopted by all of us for eradicating this menace.

Addressing seminar arranged by NAB Karachi in connection with International Anti-Corruption day ‘Corruption Free Society- A Progressive Society’ at Governor House Governor lauding NAB’s role he said that NAB adopted stringent anti-corruption curbs that act as major contribution in economic development which necessitates conducive and corruption free environment.

Highlighting causes of corruption, he said that institutional weakness, vague policy-making and poor governance leads to reduce investments both domestic and foreign. Misuse of public power and moral decay are also major causes of corruption in society, he observed

He appreciated NAB’s efforts in recovery of looted money from culprits and returning it back to government and public.

DG NAB Karachi Javed Akbar Riaz highlighted importance of awareness and said that NAB Karachi is investigating mega cases of corruption involving billions of rupees.

He said since its inception in year 1999, NAB Karachi has received more than 96,000 complaints of which 2,297 inquiries and 1,176 investigations were authorised and 919 references have been filed.

An amount of Rs 15.194 billion looted through corruption and corrupt practices has also been recovered, he added Highlighting performance of Karachi Bureau for year 2022 he said that NAB Karachi disposed of 4,396 complaints, while carried out 10 inquiries and 5 investigations. 43 accused persons were arrested and 7 references have been filed in Accountability Courts while over Rs 430 million were also recovered during  2022, he said.

Merit certificates were given to officers/officials of NAB Karachi in recognition of their best performance in year 2022. Certificates and cash prizes were also distributed among winner students of declamation contest on anti-corruption theme in English, Urdu and Sindhi language.

Colleges of Karachi, Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas Divisions participated. Ghulam Nabi Memon Inspector General of Police, Sindh, Prof. Dr. Huma Baqai and Ahmed Shah President Art Council Karachi also spoke.

Meanwhile meeting with delegation of Local Body Reporters Association here he said journalists cannot be left alone, they play vital role in integrity, development and prosperity of country.

Administrator Karachi Dr. Saifur Rehman, spokesman Governor’s House Saleem Khan, Labra Patron-in-Chief Shehzad Chaghtai, President Tanveer Syed, Gen. Secretary Imran Ali Shah, Finance Secretary Abid Abbasi, Information Secretary Ahmed Ali, Governing Body members Nadeem Siddiqui, Faisal Rajput, Bilal Zafar Solangi were present.

I asked Sindh government to allocate quota for journalists in housing schemes so that they can get rid of heavy rental housing. Dr. Saifur Rehman will cooperate you. Shahzad Chaghatai said that Labra is only representative organisation of print and electronic media journalists reporting on Local Government.
