Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial announced that the three-member apex court bench, which included Justices Mansoor and Ijazul Ahsan, would soon deliver a "short and sweet" verdict on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan's petition challenging the National Accountability (Amendment) Act, 2022. CJP Bandial, set to retire on September 16, expressed his commitment to deliver the judgment before his retirement.
During the hearing, the PTI's legal counsel presented his final arguments, and the CJP questioned the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) reasons for returning references following changes in the law, suggesting bias in the law. The bench discussed the retroactive application of NAB amendments, with Justice Mansoor questioning Parliament's authority to legislate retroactively. However, the CJP emphasized the need for clarity in the NAB law and the role of Parliament in amending legislation.
The court reserved judgment, awaiting further proceedings on this critical matter, which addresses fundamental rights concerning corruption in public property.
