ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) took suo moto notice of holding elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A nine-member bench was constituted. Hearing of case, headed by Chief Justice will be held today at 2 pm.

Earlier, Lahore High Court ordered Election Commission of Pakistan to hold elections in province in 90 days. LHC Justice Jawad Hassan pronounced reserved verdict on plea filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf seeking orders for Punjab Governor to immediately announce date for an election in province.

PTI leader and former Minister Fawad Chaudhry welcomed “Historic” ruling and said that it was victory for Constitution and law. “Federal government should sit with us and discuss national election,” he added. PTI leader and Senator Faisal Javed also welcomed judgment, saying people would make their decisions in election.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi while welcoming decision said that ECP should not delay elections after court ruling. He said that decision has raised prestige of judiciary, adding that judiciary maintained supremacy of Constitution.

PTI Secretary General Asad Umar said that Lahore High Court’s decision is success of Pakistan’s Constitution and democracy.
