ISLAMABAD: Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) said that Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act is “not in line with Shariah”, as “several provisions of act are inconsistent with Islamic principles.” CII in a notification warned that act may lead to “new social problems” and asked government to form a committee to review law related to transgender community.
It added that committee should include CII members, religious scholars and legal and medical experts. CII’s statement on bill comes a day after Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani said committee formed to consider recently submitted amendments to Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act would duly consult religious scholars and CII, if required. “Senate will never do anything against Islamic laws,” Sanjrani said. Senator Mushtaq Ahmed has filed amendments to Act which are currently being weighed by Senate committee. Strongly advising against unnecessarily politicising issue, he stressed that in case of any controversy, government was resolved to take course of consultation.
