ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to appear before it on January 11 in case which seeks to remove him from party’s chairmanship. Commission sent notice to Imran’s listed address of Bani Gala in Islamabad and directed him to appear before it next Wednesday at 10am or send lawyer to represent him.
ECP said Imran Khan should clarify his position. Notification gave references of ECP and Supreme Court verdicts. ECP said former Prime Minister was disqualified for misstatement regarding his assets. On Thursday, Lahore High Court barred Election Commission of Pakistan from proceeding to strip Imran Khan of his position as Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf after his disqualification in Toshakhana reference. A high court bench issued order day after PTI Chief filed petition against ECP’s proceedings. He argued that electoral body was exceeding its powers by trying to remove him as party head, adding that ECP issued him notice “Illegally”.
Petition maintained that proceedings were launched against him illegally as Mr Khan had declared his assets before ECP. It requested LHC to suspend ECP notice sent to Imran Khan as well as stop it from taking further action before final verdict. Last month, ECP initiated proceedings to remove Mr Khan as PTI Chief following his disqualification in Toshakhana reference.
