KARACHI: Sindh Cabinet formally approved to establish Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority (SEPRA). Cabinet in session granted approval of draft of law for establishing provincial electric power regulatory authority. “It is historic decision of Sindh government,” provincial government spokesman Murtaza Wahab said in statement. “With this decision we could supply cheaper electricity to people of our province,” Wahab said in statement.
“Government will get pass law governing Sindh Electric Power Regulatory Authority, from Sindh Assembly,” he said. According to draft of law, Sindh will distribute electricity, which will be generated in province. Provincial Energy Minister Imtiaz Shaikh, had floated idea in February last year, about setting up authority at provincial level like National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
“Constitution allows province to establish power regulatory authority,” Energy Minister said. “This authority is needed to move energy projects forward.” Cabinet had constituted committee of law and energy departments to prepare legislative bill of authority in view of constitutional, legal and technical aspects of issue.
