KARACHI: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced that by-polls and Karachi’s Local Body (LB) elections would take place on their respective dates. In a statement, ECP said by-elections for National and provincial assemblies’ seats will take place on October 16 and second phase of Karachi’s LB elections would take place on October 23.

Both elections were delayed earlier as well, but now, Commission has refused requests of authorities seeking to postpone polls. However, Commission has delayed by-election in NA-45 constituency due to security concerns. ECP made decision during meeting under chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja after federal and Sindh governments expressed reservations over holding polls due to lack of security personnel, among other reasons.

“Due to recent disastrous floods and shortage of manpower Sindh Police expressed inability for required assistance during LB polls in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions, letter said.
