Islamabad: Chairman of Pakistan Peoples’ Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari commenting on Supreme Court’s decision regarding disqualification period, emphasised importance of improving democracy and political systems in Pakistan.

Expressing his views on disqualification period, he highlighted significance of legal expertise in determining eligibility for individuals like Nawaz Sharif and members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He reiterated need to avoid political vendettas and encouraged democratic practices within political parties.

He stressed need for politics to steer clear of personal animosity, advocating for level playing field in elections. Bilawal Bhutto asserted that during their governance, there were no instances of political imprisonment.  He urged for shift away from traditional politics rooted in division and animosity. He highlighted importance of upholding democratic principles, emphasising that no government should aim to oppress opposition parties. .

Expressing doubts about prospects of certain politicians, particularly regarding possibility of becoming Prime Minister for fourth time, Bilawal expressed skepticism about longevity of certain aspirations, given political scenario. He commented on ongoing election dynamics, citing concerns about transparency and fairness of electoral process.

Regarding conduct of elections, Bilawal Bhutto cautioned against presumptions about postponement of elections, stating that it’s crucial to maintain election’s credibility.  Bilawal Bhutto said PTI founder Imran Khan should not be in prison if he is innocent. “If Khan sahab is innocent then he should not be in jail, but if he is guilty then he should stay imprisoned.” Speaking to media after hearing of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto presidential reference, Bilawal referred to current political climate of country and said, “What is happening now is not that bad, much worse has happened in past”.

He said that PPP was in favour of hearing ZAB’s case before general elections rather than after.  “If three or four Senators stand up and say something, then are their words more powerful or does constitutional and legal decision of Chief Justice carry more weight,” he said while referring to resolution passed by 14 Senate members on January 5. Responding to question, Bilawal said that Karachi had witnessed development under PPP’s tenure.

“This is first time that PPP won in both, Karachi and local body elections.” Responding to question, he commented that when fake cases were being filed against us (PPP), Imran would say that institutions were independent and liable to provide justifications. “Now Khan Sahab should also approach these institutions.”
