Antigua: Australia defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, in the Super 8 clash of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
The rain-affected match was suspended when Australia reached 100-2 in 11.2 overs while attempting to achieve the 141-run target set by Bangladesh. However, they were 28 runs ahead of the DLS par score when rain interrupted the match. David Warner scored 53 unbeaten runs in 35 balls for the winning side in an innings that included five fours and three sixes. Travid Head also contributed 31 runs in 21 balls, while Glenn Maxwell contributed 14 unbeaten runs in six balls. Rishad Hossain claimed both Australian wickets in the innings following the dismissals of Head and Captain Mitchell Marsh. After a hat-trick from star pacer Pat Cummins, who bagged figures of 3-29 in four overs, Australia restricted Bangladesh to 140-8 in 20 overs. Cummins dismissed Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan with the final two deliveries of the 18th over. After removing Towhid Hridoy, he completed his hat-trick with the first ball of the 20th over.
This was the seventh hat-trick in the T20 World Cup and the second for an Aussie since Brett Lee, also against Bangladesh. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 41 runs in 36 balls, while Hridoy scored 40 runs in 28 balls. Adam Zampa claimed impressive figures of 2-24 in four overs. This was the first Super 8 match for both teams in the tournament.
