ISLAMABAD: At United Nations (UN), Pakistan has called for addressing digital gap between under-connected and highly digitalised countries to help developing countries to make rapid all-round progress.
Taking part in debate in UN Committee on Information, Pakistani delegate Mariam Shaikh said that most of poor around world lack reliable and affordable internet access, giving rise to digital divide, which is emerging as new form of inequality among states.
She voiced concern over growing inequality in access to timely, multilingual communications, with reported 2.9 billion people never having used Internet, 96 percent of whom reside in developing countries, according to Radio Pakistan’s report.
She suggested that Global Digital Compact could potentially serve as universal and consensus global framework on digital issues, especially in addressing digital divide, enhancing connectivity, and supporting digital transformation.
