KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples’ Party leader Aseefa Bhutto Zardari said that polio vaccine is safest and most effective way to save children from crippling disease, stressing need for everyone to work together to rid country of this virus.
In her message on World Polio Day, 2023 she warned that polio had been threat to future generations of Pakistan for over two decades and battle against disease had been going on for too long. “We must all come together and save our children from this disease through regular vaccination. We must all work towards polio-free Pakistan,” Aseefa said in message.
“We need to ensure we eradicate polio, once and for all.” Polio is disease with no cure so far. It can cause paralysis and lifelong disability. Since 1994, Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme has been fighting crippling poliovirus with campaigns aimed at administering anti-polio vaccines to children under age of five years.
World Polio Day was created and celebrated by Rotary International to commemorate birthday of Jonas Salk, medical researcher who led first team to develop polio vaccine. In 1955, he created Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine. In 1962, Albert Sabin created Oral Polio Vaccine.
Because purple pinkies serve as symbols for polio immunizations, for donation of $ 1 (cost of single immunisation), volunteers will colour pinkies purple to help raise money for polio eradication.
