Announcement of KP polls date likely today, says Governor

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Ghulam Ali said that election date for KP Assembly is expected to be announced on March 6. Talking to journalists here Governor said that Election Commission of Pakistan’s letter to his principal secretary was received at 8pm and secretary will open letter himself when he returns from leave on Monday.
According to Constitution, elections should be held within 90 days after dissolution of an assembly.
On March 3, President Dr Arif Alvi gave assent to April 30 date to conduct all-important elections in Punjab.
President’s announcement comes minutes after Election Commission of Pakistan proposed dates for holding general elections in Punjab following landmark verdict of Supreme Court. April 30 falls on Sunday.
In letter to President Arif Alvi earlier, electoral body recommended day between April 30 and May 7 for elections in province where assembly was dissolved in January last. Letter was dispatched after Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja chaired meeting of ECP officials.
