ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi said that Pakistan can overcome its challenges relating to political stability if its politicians, executive and establishment make joint commitment to address issues.
President Dr Alvi in an interview with Voice of America (VOA), was responding to question if upcoming general polls would bring political stability in country. President Alvi expressed confidence that result of polls as an outcome of public opinion would lead to an environment ensuring stability and prosperity of country.
Dismissing doubts about delay of general election, he said judiciary, executive and politicians held unanimity on holding general election on announced date of February 8.
He maintained that provision of level-playing field to all political parties was mutual responsibility of interim government and Election Commission of Pakistan. "Interim government has already given assurance about providing level-playing field to all parties," he said, adding that nation had full trust in government's commitment in this regard.
President Alvi said that through his letter, he invoked interim government's attention towards apprehensions of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf. To query, President said Constitution did not allow President to take 'practical' action to ensure transparency of an election. "President has no other way but to bring such issues to notice of government," he said.
He said though office of President did not have an administrative authority, however points raised by it held significant value. "There could be many expectations [from me to act in particular way], but I will not take any unconstitutional step," he said.
Dr Alvi said he was not spokesperson of any party, but of all Pakistanis. "However, I will continue to identify and point out whenever see any issue." To question, Dr Alvi said he never showed negligence with respect to date of general election. He appreciated Supreme Court of Pakistan on demonstrating unanimity over election date.
He said case relating to contesting of election by PTI Chairman Imran Khan was subjudice and added that he had full confidence in judiciary.
