Islamabad: Barrister Shehzad Ata Elahi, lawyer from Lahore was appointed Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP). A notification issued by Ministry of Law and Justice said, "In exercise of power conferred under Article 100(1) of Constitution 1973, President is pleased to appoint Barrister Shehzad Ata Elahi as AGP with rank and status of federal Minister with immediate effect."
Article 100(1) of Constitution states "President shall appoint a person, being person qualified to be judge of Supreme Court, to be AGP."
Elahi is grandson of former President Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry and enjoys good reputation for his hard work, integrity and understanding of legal issues. Barrister Elahi belongs to law firm Cornelius, Lane and Mufti.
He is also corporate lawyer who has rich experience in commercial, tax and banking laws, civil, commercial, corporate, constitutional litigation, etc.
AGP office had been vacant since last October when Ashtar Ausaf Ali resigned, citing health reasons. In his place, Additional Attorney General Chaudhry Aamir Rehman had been appearing to represent government before Supreme Court.
Last month, apex court had held that AGP was constitutional post and it could not be left vacant since there was no mention of an acting AGP in Constitution.
