Mumbai Delhi: Afghanistan’s Consul-General in Mumbai Zakia Wardak has tendered her resignation amidst accusations of smuggling hefty 25 kilograms of gold into India.
Alleged incident, estimated at nearly $ 2 million, has not only sparked diplomatic uproar but has also left significant void in Consular representation for Afghan nationals in India.
Wardak, prominent figure in Afghanistan’s diplomatic corps and country’s most senior representative in India since closure of New Delhi Embassy in November, found herself embroiled in controversy after Indian authorities intercepted her and her son upon arrival from Dubai.
While Wardak, shielded by diplomatic immunity and escaped arrest, confiscated gold served as damning evidence against her.
Resignation announced through her official channel, underscores gravity of situation and its potential ramifications on bilateral relations.
This incident serves as stark reminder of complexities and controversies that continue to plague Afghanistan’s diplomatic endeavours on global stage.
