IHC extends order for stopping PEMRA from issuing new TV licenses

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) has extended till next hearing its order on restraining PEMRA from issuing more TV licenses. Petition from Pakistan Broadcasting (PBA) came up for hearing before single bench of IHC led by Chief Justice (CJ) IHC yesterday. PBA has requested court to halt PEMRA from issuing TV channels licenses beyond capacity. Faisal Siddiqui advocate counsel for BPA appeared in court. PEMAR presented report in court.

Court sought arguments on next hearing in light of PEMRA report. Counsel for PEMRA told court cable networks have been digitalised to considerable extent in most of cities. PBA counsel told court had PEMRA provided report earlier then he could give arguments today. Licenses were issued to 150 channels while PEMRA has capacity to issue licenses to 112 channels. Channel which gives money to cable operations it is put on air. There is no capacity for 150 channels then how can all channels be screened, court adjourned hearing of case till May 26.
